Imperfect Rainbow

Instead of just one picture, I submitted these pictures as an entire set. I thought I was being clever and taking pictures of very colorful objects around town. As a set, I named it “Photo Rainbow”.

Little did I know, I managed to botch something as simple as a rainbow! Take a look below and see if you can figure out how I messed up.

Haven’t figured it out yet? Here are a few clues:
1) Red is on one side of the rainbow.
2) Blue is way over on the other side of the rainbow.
3) Purple = Blue + Red.
4) How’s that work if red is all the way over THERE, and blue is all the way over THERE?

Still need more clues? Well, most of us have heard about the rather informal method that Isaac Newton used to pick the colors that were represented in a prism of light. It has to do with that. But it doesn’t have to do with indigo.

Stupid Indigo.

Okay, if you still haven’t guessed it, then go ahead and watch this video to get the answer. It’s only a couple of minutes, and then you can tell all of your friends something about rainbows and they’ll all think you’re a genius!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
And purple in a rainbow,
Is a supernumerary hue

  1. Interesting! Violets are blue has always concerned me. I like MinutePhysics, seriously I can handle physics only in minute increments…

  2. Yeah, right, like I’m going to remember all that to be able to explain it to my friends and impress them? I can’t even remember it enough to impress myself with my memory! It is interesting though. Thanks for sharing.
